An intriguing nose of red berries, decadent red apples, dried tobacco, roses and rich earth. Medium- to full-bodied with perfectly integrated tannins that create a lightly velvety underlay for the bright fruit and spice flavors that push through the long, long finish. Few reds from the montepulciano grape are able to offer this degree of complexity, combined with light-footed elegance and balance. Exquisite. Benchmark. Drink or hold.
The Enthusiast 100: The Best Wines of 2023 - #31. This is the Barolo we have been looking for! Black cherry, warmed spices, crushed stone and dried herbs flow from the glass. The palate is firm and states its purpose to take some time in the cellar. The core of fruit is present but reticent while the black tea, anise, pepper and mineral edge are present but want more time. Drink 2028–2045.
Notes of candied dark berries, chocolate, toasted spices and burnt orange peel. Full-bodied and intense with a toasty, chocolaty character. The succulent fruit is carried on a bed of broad but soft tannins. Lingering finish. Drink or hold.
I have long awaited the first rendition of the Giovanni Neri Brunello di Montalcino, and the 2018 does not disappoint. Here I’m finding a beguiling mix of lavender, white pepper and crushed stone giving way to dried black cherries and foreign spice. This washes across the palate with a supple wave of ripe red berries carried by vibrant acidity, as nuances of sour citrus and clove resonate throughout. Its tannins are crunchy, almost chiseled in feel, yet coupled with a staining of primary concentration that lingers under an air of violet inner florals, tapering off with tremendous length and structured for a long and balanced maturation. Made from vines that are 50 years old, the Giovanni Neri hails from a vineyard acquired in the southeast of Montalcino. This is a fabulous debut bottling.
2022's 11 Best Pinot Grigio Under $25
The fruit of this wine comes from the Dolomites, part of the ancient Alps in northern Italy. They're so ancient that these mountains were once under the sea. This means that to this day, fossils are often found in vineyards as farmers tend to the vines. This, along with the high elevation and sun, results in vibrant, crisp wines, especially white wines like this. This wine is a great way to enjoy this region.Building upon natural acidity with crisp, vibrant flavors, this is a great showcasing of mountain fruit and an ideal way to explore the Veneto region. It is easy and uncomplicated while being extremely balanced with bracing acidity and good medium fruit to complement a sunny day with good friends.
An idiosyncratic Chardonnay, engaging for its differences, including a delicate overtone of exotic spices and dried herbs and a macerated quality to the expressive blood orange and strawberry fruit flavors, with hints of grated ginger, sea salt and honeycomb. Reveals racy acidity that keeps this light on its feet throughout, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2028.
